Addis Fine Art presents Emanuel Tegene at the 2016 Armory Focus in New York between 3 - 6 March 2016.
Armory Focus, now in its 7th edition, is an invitation-only fair that spotlights the artistic landscape of a different region each year. This year's Focus surveys contemporary artistic production from African viewpoints. Focus: African Perspectives is curated by Julia Grosse and Yvette Mutumba, founders of Contemporary And, an online platform for international art from African perspectives.
Addis Fine Art will be the first Ethiopian gallery to exhibit at this renowned event, and will debut their presence with the works of painter Emanuel Tegene (b.1985, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia). Tegene is widely regarded as a top emerging talent in Ethiopia. He started his career as a cartoonist at Saloon Ethiopia and has also worked as an illustrator. Tegene's practice explores the changing cultural dynamics of Ethiopian society, which are deeply rooted in his own personal encounters.
Tegene's debut exhibition was the Art of Memory (2012), at the Italian Cultural Institute, Addis Ababa. He has also been featured in group exhibitions at the Ethiopian National Gallery (2012), the African Union Golden Jubilee (2013), the Institute of Ethiopian Studies Museum (2013) and Addis Fine Art Gallery (2016). Recent solo exhibitions include Art and Social Commentary: Here and There, Tobya Art Gallery, Seattle (2015), the Galani Gallery, Addis Ababa (2014) and Angels & Demons, Alliance Ethio-Française, Addis Ababa (2014).
