Basel Social Club: Amel Bashier

15 - 21 June 2025

Basel Social Club's 2025 edition takes place in a former private bank located in the heart of the city, on Basel’s oldest street. In keeping with its tradition of site-specific programming, this edition engages directly with the building’s symbolic and material past. Works on paper and canvas by Sudanese artist Amel Bashier are included as part of the curated presentation.

Amel Bashier (b. 1981) is inspired by the wisdom and strength of her female ancestors, particularly those who struggled and fought for their rights. She uses their stories both as a source of vitality for her creative process, and as a point of comparison to the continued battle of the modern-day Sudanese women's rights movement. Her latest works on canvas focus on the complex relationships between people, and the emotions that result from these relationships–such as brokenness, anger, pain, strength, and joy.

Amel Bashier spent her childhood between Saudi Arabia and Sudan, and now lives in France. She has exhibited in New York, London, Paris, Cairo, Dubai, Nairobi, Sharjah, and Khartoum.
