Alemani cites Berhanu as an example of artists who create “new forms of symbiosis between animals and human beings”, crafting “narratives that interweave environmental concerns with ancient chthonic deities, yielding innovative ecofeminist mythologies”. The Ethiopian artist, who now lives in Maryland, makes paintings that appear abstract at a distance, but clearly contain bodily aspects, as well as forms that suggest both landscapes and cellular organisms.
